Kid Rock - Kid Rock (2003)

Robert James Ritchie (born January 17, 1971), known by his stage name Kid Rock, is an American singer-songwriter with five Grammy Award nominations. Kid Rock is known for his eccentric personality & wit and his music that fuses rap with heavy metal, blues rock, southern rock, funk and country music.
“Kid Rock” is an eponymous album by Kid Rock and his fourth Atlantic Records album. It was released in 2003. It was critically acclaimed by Rolling Stone Magazine; they named it one of the 50 Greatest Albums of 2003. Although this album has been largely ignored by the record buying public as Kid Rock's most mature album to date. He shows his creative ability, his songwriting skills and cements his relationship with the country music tradition. The country ballad "Cold and Empty," for example, which he co-wrote with Kenny Chesney is a definite highlight on the album as well as the moving "Do It For You." The album saw two covers: the Bob Seger number "Hard Night For Sarah," which had been never released since Bob Seger wrote in in 1979 and Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love". "Single Father" landed him on the country chart for a second straight album. It charted as Rock's 3rd best country single and was written by country musician David Allan Coe.

Tears For Fears - The Seeds Of Love (1992)

“The Seeds Of Love” is the third album by the British band Tears for Fears, and was released in 1989.
"Seeds Of Love" is the definitive masterpiece of the 1980's, a devastatingly beautiful album of pop gems that was a fabulous goodbye to the decade.
The album was written largely by Orzabal along with keyboardist Nicky Holland, who had toured with the band on their global 1985 "Big Chair" tour. Moving from various studios and using various sets of producers over many months, the band ultimately decided to scrap that previous work and take the reins themselves with assistance from engineer David Bascombe. Much of the material was recorded in jam sessions and later edited down. The length of the production left the band with towering debt and a record company eager to cash in on lost earnings. The album retained the band's epic sound while showing increasing influences ranging from jazz and blues to The Beatles, the latter being evident on the hit single "Sowing the Seeds of Love"
Every song on the CD is almost like a mini-suite in itself; there is not one even remotely unsure moment on this one, but the highlights would have to be the achingly beautiful "Swords And Knives" and the astonishing "Advice For the Young At Heart." Listen to this album on a beautiful morning with your windows down, or late at night with the moon as your only source of shadows....I predict that you will fall in love with it over and over as I have.

The Corrs - Borrowed Heaven (2004)

The Corrs are a Celtic folk rock group from Dundalk, Ireland. The group consists of the Corr siblings: Andrea (lead vocals, tin whistle); Sharon (violin, vocals); Caroline (drums, percussion, bodhrán, vocals); and Jim (guitar, keyboards, vocals).
“Borrowed Heaven” is an album by The Corrs and it was produced by Olle Romo. The album was released 31 May 2004
For this album Sharon Corr managed to write and play and make a significant contribution with songs such as 'Hideaway', 'Long Night', and 'Goodbye'.
The Corrs created a folkier, edgier, and more guitar oriented album than previous albums, notably their year 2000 album In Blue. This is because Jim Corr plays most of the guitars and keyboards.
Reviews for this album varied greatly. Fans of the band generally agree the album represents a return of sorts to the group's Celtic folk pop origins after the much 'poppier' In Blue released in 2000. The band released three singles from this album: 'Summer Sunshine', 'Angel', and 'Long Night'. Other notable tracks include the title track 'Borrowed Heaven' which featured an appearance from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and 'Time Enough For Tears' which was penned by U2's Bono.

Eurythmics - In The Garden (Deluxe Edition) (1981)

Eurythmics are a British musical duo, formed in 1980 by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart.
In the Garden is the debut studio album by the British new wave duo Eurythmics, released in 1981.
It was co-produced with 'krautrock' producer Conny Plank, at his studio in Cologne, with numerous guest musicians. Plank had previously worked with the duo whilst they were in their previous band The Tourists.
Two singles were released from the album in the UK: "Never Gonna Cry Again" and "Belinda." Neither the album nor the singles achieved much commercial success, although Never Gonna Cry Again charted at #63 in the singles chart. On November 14, 2005, SonyBMG repackaged and released Eurythmics' back catalog as "2005 Deluxe Edition Reissues." The re-issue of In the Garden added the B-sides from the album's two singles, plus three tracks recorded live on the accompanying tour.

Roxy Music - Manifesto (1979)

“Manifesto” is the sixth studio album by Roxy Music, and was released in 1979.
Following an almost four-year recording hiatus, Roxy Music regrouped for this album, their first since 1975's “Siren”.
Returning to action after four years of solo projects, Roxy Music redefined its sound and agenda on Manifesto. More than ever, Roxy sounds like Bryan Ferry's backing band, as the group strips away its art rock influences, edits out the instrumental interludes in favor of concise pop songs, and adds layers of stylish disco rhythms. Although the songwriting is distressingly inconsistent, there are a number of wonderful moments on the record, particularly in the sighing "Angel Eyes" and the heartbroken "Dance Away, "Angel Eyes" is being far more electronic and disco, “Trash” is also being heavily reworked into a synthesizer-accompanied disco song. Still, trading sonic adventure for lush, accessible disco-pop isn't entirely satisfactory, even if it is momentarily seductive.

Alice In Chains - Jar Of Flies (1994)

“Jar Of Flies” is the third studio EP by the Seattle, Washington grunge band Alice in Chains, released on January 25, 1994 through Columbia Records.
Following Alice in Chains' extensive 1993 world tour for Dirt and appearance at Lollapalooza, the band members returned home to Seattle to find themselves evicted from their residence after failing to pay the rent. The band then moved into London Bridge Studio feeling lonely and depressed. Vocalist Layne Staley said the band "just wanted to go into the studio for a few days with our acoustic guitars and see what happened." "We never really planned on the music we made at that time to be released. But the record label heard it and they really liked it. For us, it was just the experience of four guys getting together in the studio and making some music."
Written and recorded in one week in September 1993, Jar of Flies was produced by the band members themselves. Jar of Flies marks the first album with bassist Mike Inez. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell said, "That was the first time we'd written with Mike Inez...The whole Jar of Flies EP proved to both us and the fans what a talented and valid part of the band Mike was. He plays the nastiest, darkest shit but he's got the sweetest heart in the world."
Jar of Flies debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming the first ever EP—and first Alice in Chains release—to top the charts. Paul Evans of Rolling Stone called the EP "darkly gorgeous", and Steve Huey stated "Jar of Flies is a low-key stunner, achingly gorgeous and harrowingly sorrowful all at once". Jar of Flies features Alice in Chains' only number one single on the Mainstream Rock charts, "No Excuses". The second single, "I Stay Away", reached number ten on the Mainstream rock charts, while the final single "Don't Follow", reached number 25. After the release of Jar of Flies, Layne Staley entered rehab for heroin addiction. The band was scheduled to tour during the summer of 1994 with Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies, but while in rehearsal for the tour, Staley began using heroin again. Staley's condition prompted the other band members to cancel all scheduled dates one day before the start of the tour, putting the band on hiatus.

Golden Earring - To The Hilt (1976)

"To The Hilt" is the eleventh album by Dutch rock band Golden Earring, released in 1976.
Golden Earring fully gives themselves over to the prog rock tendencies that they had toyed with throughout the 1970s. The resulting album has a strong prog feel but lacks the characteristic sound and the solid material that defined the group's best efforts to that point. The band puts in a typically energetic and thunderous performance, but their strong instrumental chops can't overcome the self-indulgent nature of much of the album's material: "Why Me?" and "Latin Lightning" are a few of the potentially interesting songs on To the Hilt that are undercut by dull, overlong sections of jamming. Said songs also lack the tight arrangements and the sudden, surprising instrumental twists that made the group's past epics so interesting. The album's rigorous pursuit of a full-blooded art rock sound results in this album lacking the distinctive, easily identifiable sound that infused Golden Earring classics like "Radar Love" or "She Flies on Strange Wings." Despite these problems, some good songs shine through. The album's best songs tend to be the shortest ones: "Facesitter" is a strong rocker built on an interesting blend of synthesizer and acoustic guitar and the title track pursues a galloping country-rock groove that made it a favorite in concert. However, high points like these are separated by long stretches of complex but faceless jamming that makes To the Hilt a chore to get through. As a result, this album is virtually guaranteed to leave the casual listener cold and can only be recommended to the most hardcore of Golden Earring fans.

Norman Greenbaum - Petaluma (1972)

After making a bundle on his big Top-40 pop hit, "Spirit In The Sky," Greenbaum tuned in and dropped out, investing his cash in a chicken farm out in Petaluma, California (which at the time was way out in the boonies...) The quiet life agreed with him, and this goofy little album is one of the hidden gems from the early '70s, featuring some nice assist by Ry Cooder on mandolin and guitar. The title track is great, along with the other enchanting ditties on here. Fun stuff!

Matthews Southern Comfort - Distilled (1976)

Comprised of members Carl Barnwell (guitar, vocals), Ray Duffy (drums), Mark Griffiths (guitar), Gordon Huntley (pedal steel guitar), and Andy Leigh (bass, vocals), country rockers Southern Comfort formed in 1970 and issued several releases during the early part of the decade. The group's debut, Frog City, was issued in 1971, which was followed up by both a sophomore self-titled release and Stir Don't Shake in 1972, before the quintet split up. Afterwards, Carl Barnwell went on to form his own group, Ray Duffy played with the pop duo Gallagher & Lyle, while the rest of the members went on to session work. A post-mortem compilation, “Distilled”, followed in 1976.

Santana - Marathon (1979)

“Marathon” is a 1979 album by Santana. This marked the beginning of the group's commercial slide. Alex Ligertwood, who would sing with the group throughout the '80s, joined the group for this album. Marathon marked the addition of keyboard player Alan Pasqua and singer Greg Walker's replacement by singer/guitarist Alex Ligertwood in the Santana lineup. Otherwise, the album was notable for consisting entirely of band-written material, although those songs were in the established R&B/rock style evolved on albums like Amigos, Festival, and Inner Secrets. The formula seemed to be wearing thin by now, however, as, even with a Top 40 hit in "You Know That I Love You".

Prince & The Revolution - Parade (1986)

“Parade”: Music from the Motion Picture "Under the Cherry Moon" is a 1986 album by Prince and the Revolution. It was the follow-up to Around the World in a Day and the soundtrack to Prince's second film. The album sees Prince further diversifying musically, adding orchestrations to his music and presenting a very European feel. Prince also displayed a new image with Parade: his trademark ruffled shirts, wild curly hair, and purple satin robes which defined his look from 1981's Controversy to 1985's Around the World in a Day gave way to slicked-back hair and dress suits. Even though the single, "Kiss," was a number one hit, the album as a whole was not well-received in the U.S. Europe, however, embraced the album, and for the first time in Prince's career, European album sales eclipsed those in the U.S. This was Prince's final album released with The Revolution.
The album was, for the most part, a solo effort by Prince, aside for the full band's input on "Mountains." Wendy and Lisa are co-credited with writing the music for "Mountains" and "Sometimes It Snows in April," and background singing on many tracks.

Alice Cooper (born Vincent Damon Furnier; February 4, 1948) is an American rock singer, songwriter and musician whose career spans more than four decades. With a stage show that features guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls, Cooper has drawn equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal and garage rock to create a theatrical brand of rock music that would come to be known as shock rock.
“From The Inside” is a concept album by Alice Cooper, released in 1978. It was inspired by Cooper's stay in a New York sanitarium due to his alcoholism. Each of the characters in the songs were based on actual people Cooper met in the sanitarium. With this album, the Alice Cooper Band saw the addition of three former members of the Elton John band: lyricist Bernie Taupin, guitarist Davey Johnstone, and bassist Dee Murray.

Grace Slick (born Grace Barnett Wing on October 30, 1939) is an American singer and songwriter, who was one of the lead singers of the rock groups The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, and as a solo artist, for nearly three decades, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. Slick was an important figure in the 1960s psychedelic rock genre, and is known for her witty, often acid-tongued, thought-provoking lyrics and powerful contralto vocals.
The Second Solo Album “Dreams” (1980), was recorded in NYC without any previous or current members of Jefferson Starship, And Was Recorded after She Dried Out in Rehab to Rid Herself of Accumulated Vices Over the Years. The Resulting Music was Not as Obtuse Or Adventurous as her Audiences Had Come to Expect from the Wild Woman of Rock, but She Rocked it Out Nonetheless on "Full Moon Man", "Seasons" and the Title Track. This album is kind of an amalgam of all different styles. We have Spanish music on "El Diablo," metal on "Angel of Night," arena-rock-power-ballads like "Full Moon Man" and "Face to the Wind," the world music-influenced "Seasons," and the bluesy "Do It the Hard Way." On almost every cut Grace and her band are backed by a full orchestra. She also wrote & composed over half of this album by herself. Trust me, if you are a fan of Grace's at all, or if you're new to the wonderful world of the Airplane/Starship oeuvre, you cannot go wrong with this album. Stand-out cuts: "Dreams," "El Diablo," "Angel of Night," "Full Moon Man," "Let It Go."

This is the second and last album to feature Joseph Williams on lead vocals. He was fired after the Seventh One world tour due to drug abuse. Jon Anderson of Yes features on backup vocals on the single, "Stop Loving You." The record's other single, "Pamela" also became very popular and would be the band's last to hit the U.S. Top 40. The Seventh One became the band's most successful release since Toto IV, and according to David Paich, the record was supposed to be their comeback record, but personnel changes at the record company saw the album's promotion and advertising money pulled. The band toured from February until July of 1988.

The Alan Parsons Project - Gaudi (1987)

The Alan Parsons Project was a British progressive rock band active between 1975 and 1990, founded by Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons.
Gaudi is the final and tenth studio album by The Alan Parsons Project, and it was released in 1987. Gaudi refers to Antoni Gaudí, an architect, and the opening track references what is probably his best known building, La Sagrada Familia. "Closer to Heaven" and "Money Talks" were used in an episode of the TV series Miami Vice. Inspired by architect Antonio Gaudi, the Alan Parsons Project's Gaudi from 1987 has a leaner, edgier sound that is best represented on "Standing on Higher Ground." The last track, "Paseo de Graciad," is a finely orchestrated instrumental done exquisitely in full Parsons style. The usual lineup of Miles, Woolfson, Zakatek, and Rainbow share the singing duties, with Geoff Barradale taking over on "Standing on Higher Ground."

Herman Brood & His Wild Romance - Street (1977)

Herman Brood (Zwolle, 5 November 1946 – Amsterdam, 11 July 2001) was a Dutch musician, painter and media personality. Initially a musician who achieved artistic and commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s, and called "the Netherlands' greatest and only rock 'n' roll star," later in life he became a well-known painter.
Known for his hedonistic lifestyle of "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll," Brood was an enfant terrible and a cultural figure whose suicide, apparently caused by a failure to kick his drug and alcohol habit, only strengthened his controversial status. His suicide, according to a poll organized to celebrate fifty years of Dutch popular music, was the most significant event in its history.
“Street” is the first studio album, and the start of a solo career for Herman Brood, who had earlier toured and recorded with Cuby and the Blizzards and made one record with the short-lived band Stud. Commercially, it was not very successful: on the Dutch album chart, it reached #30 on 28 May 1977 and stayed on the chart for 7 weeks. The record was re-released on CD in 1995 by Sony BMG/Ariola.

Propaganda - A Secret Wish (Japanese version) (1985)

Propaganda was formed in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1982 by Ralf Dörper (a member of the German industrial band Die Krupps), part-time DJ Andreas Thein and singer Susanne Freytag. As a trio, they made demo recordings for future release. With the inclusion of classically trained musician and composer Michael Mertens and 19-year old vocalist Claudia Brücken, journalist Paul Morley signed the band to Trevor Horn's newly-formed ZTT Records label. The group relocated to the United Kingdom and released the single "Dr. Mabuse", named after the fictional character made famous by film maker Fritz Lang. Propaganda was a mid 1980's electro-pop group based in England, comprised of Claudia Bruecken, Susanne Freytag, Ralph Doerper, and Michael Mertens. 1985 saw the release of Secret Wish, their magnificent debut album for the ZTT records (also home to Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Art Of Noise). The Japanese version contains 12' inch and added versions of the original Secret Wish album. "A Secret Wish" was the 1985 debut album of synthpop band Propaganda. It was produced by Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn. The album shares many of the characteristics of other early-'80s ZTT releases, especially in the groundbreaking use of synthesizers, such as the Fairlight CMI. The singles "Duel" and "Dr. Mabuse" were both successful UK chart hits. The track "p:Machinery" was also released as a single and was featured in an episode of the 80's TV Show Miami Vice.

Boston - Corporate America (2002)

“Corporate America” is the fifth studio album by American rock band Boston, released in 2002. Boston is back. Classic Rock of the 70s is now in the 2000s. But how does it sound? It sounds like Boston. Boston had a sound which made it unique to the 70s. People could tell a Boston song with their orchestral sweeping guitars. The only difference here is that the band is even more socially conscious. Songs are about corporate America, vegetarianism and generally saving the world.
This album featured the largest Boston lineup ever; returning members included Delp and Cosmo on guitar and lead vocals, Scholz on lead guitar and organ, and Gary Pihl on guitar, along with the new members: Anthony Cosmo (Fran Cosmo's son) on rhythm guitar, Jeff Neal on drums and Kimberley Dahme on bass and vocals. The Doobie Brothers - Cycles (1989)

“Cycles” is the tenth studio album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers, released in 1989. The successful reunion sparked discussions about reconstituting the band on a permanent basis. They eventually decided to replicate the Toulouse Street/Captain and Me incarnation, settling on a line-up featuring Johnston, Simmons, Hartman, Porter and Hossack plus more recent addition LaKind and released Cycles on Capitol Records in 1989. It featured a Top Ten single, "The Doctor," which showcased Johnston's unmistakable voice and soaring lead guitar, and reminded listeners of the band's pre-McDonald triumphs, which was natural, given the lineup of the band at this time. The song is very similar to "China Grove" and the connection is further enhanced by guest Bill Payne's tinkling piano. There was more strong material on the album, including Johnston's "South Of The Border", Simmons' "Take Me To The Highway", a great version of the Isley Brothers' "Need A Little Taste Of Love", and perhaps the best version ever done of the Four Tops classic, "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison"), which had been covered by Santana years before. Cycles proved a successful, strong and very solid comeback album and was certified gold. Bumpus also participated on the 1989 tour, adding his distinctive voice, keyboards, saxophone and flute to the proceedings. His presence bridged the gap between the current band and the McDonald era; he sang lead vocals on the song "One Step Closer" (as he originally had on the 1980 album) while Simmons took McDonald's part. The group was further augmented on the 1989 tour by Dale Ockerman (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), Richard Bryant (vocals, percussion) and Jimi Fox (percussion, backing vocals). Due to illness, LaKind stepped down before the tour.

The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by Irish rock band U2, released 9 March 1987 on Island Records. Recording sessions took place from July to November of 1986 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. The album features the band's exploration of roots rock, with their music exhibiting influences from blues-rock, folk rock, country music, and gospel music. Lyrically, The Joshua Tree depicts the band's fascination with America and many of the ideas it stood for. The album was produced and engineered by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. “Ray Of Light” is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on March 3, 1998 by Maverick Records.
The working title for this album was The Drowned World, inspired by the novel by J. G. Ballard. It was primarily produced by Madonna, William Orbit, and Patrick Leonard. The album featured a new musical direction for Madonna, as well as personal lyrics about motherhood, fame, and spirituality. Madonna's vocal range was also stronger, because of the voice training she underwent during Evita. Madonna took her collaborations with Rick Nowels and Patrick Leonard to British electronic music musician William Orbit. The album was recorded over four and a half months in Los Angeles, California in 1997, the longest Madonna had ever worked on an album. For most of the recording process, only three other people were in the studio with Madonna: William Orbit, engineer Pat McCarthy, and his assistant engineer, Matt Silva. The recording process was initially plagued with machinery problems, as Orbit preferred to work with samples, synth sounds, and Pro Tools, and not with live musicians.

Little River Band - The Net (1983)

Little River Band are an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1975 and named after a road sign for the Victorian township of Little River, on the way to Geelong. They were the first Australian rock group to enjoy sustained commercial success in the United States.
“The Net” is the 7th album by the Little River Band, released on January 1, 1983, and was LRB's first album with John Farnham, after Glenn Shorrock departed from the band in 1982. The album was released after the Greatest Hits album which had one song with Farnham singing lead vocals The Other Guy. Farnham deliberately tried to avoid becoming a clone of Shorrock almost immediately adapting his vocal style to fit the LRB mold. The album itself, it one of the best out of print albums I've ever heard. Even songs that didn't capture me initially like The Danger Sign and the Net eventually grew on me. The first three songs You're Driving Me Out of My Mind, We Too and especially No More Tears almost define the Farnham era that lasted from 1983 until 1986. The second five tracks are more of an acquired taste than the first five. Additionally, the bonus track One Day is good enough that you're left wondering why it was left off the original album.

Gregory Lenoir Allman (born December 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee), known as Gregg Allman, is a rock and blues singer, keyboardist, guitarist and songwriter, best known as a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band.

Stevie Nicks - The Wild Heart (1983)

In the spring of 1983, Nicks worked on her second solo album. Inspired in part by the death of her close friend Robin Anderson from leukemia in late 1982, the album was recorded mostly live and retains a rock-inspired, live quality.Nicks released The Wild Heart on June 10, 1983. The album featured many of the same musicians and producers from Bella Donna, but it also introduced songwriter and performer Sandy Stewart who lent a synthesizer sound prevalent in early 1980s rock music.
The album is notable for its array of prominent guest musicians. Tom Petty made a return to write "I Will Run to You", on which his bandmates from the Heartbreakers performed. Nicks' Fleetwood Mac bandmate, drummer Mick Fleetwood, made an appearance on the track "Sable on Blond". Toto's Steve Lukather contributed some of the guitar work on what would become the album's biggest hit single, "Stand Back", which also features an uncredited contribution from Prince, who played the synthesizer track. Nicks also worked with friend Sandy Stewart, who wrote the music for three tracks on the album.
“The Wild Heart” went double platinum, and featured three hit singles. The album's closing track, "Beauty and the Beast", featured lyrics devoted to Mick Fleetwood with whom Nicks later admitted to having a short love affair in the late 1970s. Of the many songs recorded for the album, only ten made it to the final version.

With Darius Rucker's ringing baritone and Mark Bryan's muscular guitar framing Jim Sonefeld's bluesy, energetic southern folk rock tunes, it's easy to understand its success: It's the kind of thoroughly likable album people sing along with on the car radio. When Rucker demands, "Stand up and let me see you smile," there's something that feels real and convincing behind it; sure, it's a formula, but a sincere one, and it works over and over again. Songs like "Let Her Cry," "Hold My Hand," and "Running from an Angel" lay down the rhythm for a cohesive, feel-good collection. There may not be a lot of virtuosity behind it, but there's plenty of fun.

He and his gang were always playing tricks on the teachers and bullying other children in the school. One day he got himself into very serious trouble with a naughty schoolgirl and he was sent to the Headmaster who decided to disgrace the naughty boy and his gang in front of the whole school. After this punishment the boy turned into a hard and bitter character. Perhaps it was not the punishment that changed him but the fact that he realised people in authority would always be there to kick him down and the Establishment would always put him in his place. Ry Cooder - Chicken Skin Music (1976)

“Chicken Skin Music” is Ry Cooder's fifth album, released in 1976
Ry Cooder has always believed in the "mutuality in music," and this may be no more evident in his career than with his fifth album, Chicken Skin Music (a Hawaiian colloquialism, synonymous with goosebumps). Even more than usual, Cooder refuses to recognize borders -- geographical or musical -- presenting "Stand By Me" as a gospel song with a norteño arrangement, or giving the Jim Reeves country-pop classic, "He'll Have to Go," a bolero rhythm, featuring the interplay of Flaco Jimenez's accordion and Pat Rizzo's alto sax. Elsewhere, he teams with a pair of Hawaiian greats -- steel guitarist and singer Gabby Pahinui and slack key guitar master Atta Isaacs -- on the Hank Snow hit "Yellow Roses" and the beautiful instrumental "Chloe." If Cooder's approach to the music is stylistically diverse, his choice of material certainly follows suit. Bookended by a couple of Leadbelly compositions, Chicken Skin Music sports a collection of songs ranging from the aforementioned tracks to the charming old minstrel/medicine show number "I Got Mine" and the syncopated R&B of "Smack Dab in the Middle." Also included is Appalachian songwriter Blind Alfred Reed's "Always Lift Him Up," complete with a Hawaiian gospel tune, "Kanaka Wai Wai," woven into the instrumental section. As he explains in the album's liner notes, Cooder understands the connection between these seemingly disparate styles.
